ABOUT

Rising guitarist Tobias James performs with great energy, musicality, technique and a genuine enthusiasm for the repertoire (Jason Vieaux, Grammy-Award winning guitarist) and is bursting onto the musical scene with great passion. A native of the Chicago area, Tobias was born into a musical family where he started to play Suzuki classical guitar at age six and Suzuki cello at age eight. After studying guitar at the Northwestern High School Music Institute as a freshman in high school, he decided to become a professional musician. Ever since, Tobias has played in halls such as Mixon Hall, Cleveland OH, Lutkin Hall Evanston IL, Hatch Recital Rochester NY and Comstock Concert Hall Louisville KY. Tobias performs across the United States in many concerts and competitions where he was a prize recipient at Guitar Foundation of America (4th place youth 2012), Indiana International Guitar competition (2nd place youth 2011), All Ohio Stroud Competition (4th place 2014), East Carolina Guitar competition, Louisville Guitar competition and others. In addition to classical guitar, Tobias is also an avid flamenco guitarist where he accompanies Peabody Preparatory’s flamenco dance class. He wishes to bring this tradition back into the classical realm by commissioning new pieces that incorporate elements of flamenco as well as performing solo works of flamenco guitarists. As a pedagogue, Tobias worked as an apprentice with the Distance learning department at the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) where he taught guitar and music to people of various backgrounds and age groups in televised conferences via the internet. While at CIM, he studied Eurythmics under Brian Sweigart and incorporates this pedagogical tool to enhance his teaching. He is certified to teach Suzuki Guitar book 1 and 2 and studied teaching guitarcurriculum.org under Travis Marcum, Jeremy Osborne, and Matt Hinsley. Tobias is a faculty member at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. He studied at the Peabody Institute with Julian Gray obtaining a Masters of Music in Guitar Performance and Pedagogy. He received his Bachelors in Guitar Performance at CIM with Jason Vieaux and Colin Davin with a Minor in Mathematics from Case Western Reserve University.
